Chinese Couple’s U.S. Surrogacy Journey: From Loss to Parenthood

When I first met this young couple from Beijing, I could see both strength and weariness in their eyes. They had been married for years and had long dreamed of becoming parents. But like many others, the path to parenthood had not been kind to them.

Struggles with IVF in China

In China, the couple underwent multiple IVF treatments—first in Beijing, then again in Shanghai. Each cycle brought renewed hope. They were even able to create embryos, though none had undergone PGT-A genetic testing.

In China, PGT-A testing is usually offered only in limited medical situations, meaning many couples face lower success rates with embryo transfers. That may have been a contributing factor to what happened next.

Their first two embryo transfers ended in disappointment. The third seemed promising at first when implantation occurred, but the pregnancy stopped progressing. After a difficult D&C procedure, the couple was left with deep emotional and physical scars.

Turning to U.S. IVF with PGT-A Testing

When we met in person during one of my visits to Beijing, we spoke not just about their past, but about new possibilities. I suggested that they consider IVF in the United States, where PGT-A testing is widely available and routinely used to improve success rates.

The couple decided to travel to California for another IVF cycle. This time, three embryos were successfully created and passed PGT-A screening. With cautious optimism, the intended mother tried one more time to carry a pregnancy.

Unfortunately, her HCG levels rose too slowly. An ultrasound back in China confirmed an ectopic pregnancy, requiring surgery. After years of heartbreak, the couple knew they could not face another loss.

When Surrogacy Became the Answer

With clarity and courage, they turned to U.S. surrogacy, since surrogacy is illegal in China. In Arizona, they matched with an experienced surrogate whose warmth and kindness immediately reassured them.

The surrogate passed all medical and psychological screenings, and the embryo transfer was a success. This time, everything felt different.

A Surrogacy Success Story in Arizona

In the summer of 2020, their son was born—healthy, beautiful, and deeply loved. Holding him for the first time, the couple’s years of heartbreak finally gave way to joy.

Their journey illustrates not only the challenges of infertility but also the hope that international surrogacy in the U.S. can provide.

Hope for Other Intended Parents

This story is one of love, perseverance, and the power of never giving up. For intended parents worldwide—especially those in countries where surrogacy is not an option—know that a path forward exists.
