Considering it is National Infertility Awareness Week #NIAW we want to shed some light on some of the reasons intended parents choose to pursue surrogacy. For starters, infertility is incredibly complex and it affects so many people. What was once thought to be one in eight people being affected by infertility, the current statistic is now one in six. That’s a huge percentage of our population that is struggling to conceive in one way or another. Some reasons include:
- Ovulation disorders like PCOS, hypothyroidism/hyperthyroidism, increased levels of prolactin, etc.
- Poor egg quality
- Fallopian tube damage or blockage
- Endometriosis
- Primary ovarian insufficiency
- Hostile conditions of the uterus like polyps and fibroids
- Genetic Conditions
- Damage related to cancer and its treatment
- Pelvic adhesions
- Low egg reserves
- Conditions that affect sperm quality
- Problems preventing sperm reaching the female reproductive tract
- Lack of (or damage to) testicles, ovaries, or uterus
- Environmental side effects causing infections or hostile environments for eggs and sperm
- Recurring miscarriage or fetal demise
- Advanced parental age
When intended parents make the decision to pursue surrogacy, it is not one that has been made lightly. They have done so based on not wanting to waste any more time or precious embryos. They are eager to become parents and need the assistance of a surrogate mother to do so!
We hope that shines some light on why surrogacy is an option for many intended families. If you are eager to apply, start your initial application here!
