How did eating fries after an embryo transfer become a tradition? Well, it all stemmed from practicality before it became a tradition within the fertility community. In earlier fertility protocols, doctors of patients that were at a higher risk of developing OHSS (ovarian hyperstimulation syndrome) would suggest eating something a little higher in salt following egg retrievals. French fries quickly became a default suggestion as many people think of fries quickly when thinking about something salty to eat.
We can’t prove that there is any scientific base in this suggestion, but it was popular enough that it caught on as a very typical thing to hear. Eventually, it morphed into a popular ritual following embryo transfers as well.
And thus, a fertility tradition was born! Some people swear by certain chains, such as the ever-popular McDonalds, while some say that anything salty will do the trick! Whatever you choose to snack on your ride home from your embryo transfer, we don’t judge. If it’s fries that help that little embryo nestle in for the next several months, that is okay with us (in moderation, of course!)
